Signs of consumer confidence

There’s a lot of talk about the economy, and a recession, and in general people and corporations spending less because they worry they might not have as much money as before, which of course is a cyclical self-fulfilling prophesy. But things can’t be that bad yet, because shopping was strong in the US last Friday, traditionally the single strongest day of retail sales in that country. In fact, in a Wal-Mart in Long Island, shoppers kept shopping despite staff attempting to close the store, on account of the crowd having trampled a man to death when the doors opened (four other people required hospitalization, including a woman eight months pregnant, but all were expected to fully recover). With an attitude like that, we’ll spend our way out of this slump in no time.
